A while ago we had written an article about why SEO is important for a business.  A lot of people ask whether SEO takes time and try to find different ways of taking a shorter route. There is only one truth, and it is plain and simple: yes SEO does take time, but it is well worth all the time it takes to invest in it.

Why SEO takes time

What one needs to remember is that SEO focuses on optimising a website to rank high in Google’s organic (free) search results.

It is the process of getting traffic from the non-paid search results on search engines, and therefore it stands to reason that it requires time and effort.

A lot of people give up when they don’t start seeing results. They get frustrated and stop an SEO campaign halfway through, throwing away all the fundamental building blocks that would bear them fruit had they persisted.

Most turn completely to SEM, (Search Engine Marketing) and while it is true that SEM brings faster results, it also means that you end up paying for each visit, thus not sustainable in the long run.  Also worth noting is that Google’s SEM AdWords Platform provides a “quality score” based on how relevant the paid adverts are to the content on the page they link to – so SEO can help you obtain a higher quality score, thus reducing the price of the PPC (pay per click) adverts.

In fact, a graph for PPC will show a spike in traffic and then a dramatic decrease, while a graph for SEO shows a very slow upwards progression, and, if done properly, a considerable spike.

For this reason, SEM is mostly used as a short-term strategy to drive immediate traffic.

Ultimately, from our experience working with different clients, we believe that the best way to go about any digital marketing strategy, is to effectively combine both, so that while one drives immediate traffic to the website in a very short amount of time, the other one follows up by driving the most cost-effective traffic to the website for the longer term.

The Process of SEO

Strictly speaking, on the surface, SEO does provide immediate results when it comes to fresh content and better organization, but when it comes to ranking and traffic, and the hard work to attain that prestigious position on the first page of major search engines, then we are talking about a longer process.

Many marketers regard the initial stages as tough, and fail to understand that while SEO takes time, it builds trust with the visitors and “builds on itself” as time goes by.

What one needs to understand is that it is a process, and one that cannot be rushed. It is a delicate process and although it is very time consuming, it should not deter anyone from gaining the crucial benefits it has to offer.

Moreover, there are a lot of factors that have to be taken into consideration when working on an SEO strategy, mainly:

  1. Baseline traffic
  2. Website design
  3. Domain age
  4. Geographic location
  5. Competition
  6. Target market

If done right, results can start to show within 4 to 6 months and have long lasting effects.

Why it is important to take it slow

Taking your time and not rushing with SEO will prove highly beneficial for many reasons.

For starters, you will not have to go back and improve what you already did – which would end up taking you more time and you might even end up with an overload that will start slipping through your hands.

Also, if a website is not planned properly, you are more likely to hit bumps in the road in terms of having to change core elements, like, for example, the URL Structure.

Keep in mind that the content on your website must also be written with the users in mind. Many make the mistake of writing only for Google’s algorithm, but attracting visits with great SEO whilst not providing great content for the reader will result in users leaving the site abruptly, thus increasing the bounce rate (a bounce is a one-page visit).

Content writers have to write content that appeals to the reader whilst at the same time implementing an SEO strategy, for example, by using keywords effectively so as to rank high on Google and other search engines, thus driving targeted traffic to your website.

When it comes to SEO, the rule is always the same – there are no shortcuts. Optimisation has to be done right from inception. You will see that everything begins to compound over time and will gradually deliver greater returns because the more you do SEO, the more online visibility the site will get overall.

While this might seem like a complex task to accomplish and keep up to date, by time you will get used to it and learn that it truly drives the right customers to your website.

Do not make the same mistake as those businesses who give up after not receiving what they perceive as a substantial traffic increase early on in their SEO campaign.
